What starts a sequence

Stay chill. A sequence never starts on its own. It starts with one person's own action, on one of your campaigns. Here's what counts, and what never does.

Every start is one campaign you name, and one action on it. A click in that campaign starts it: any link, or just the one you choose. So does the form on its landing page. So does a reply to it. A form on your website never does. And neither does a list, a date, a score or an open.

A person is in one sequence per campaign at a time. Say a click starts theirs. If they then fill in its form, they move to the sequence the form starts, because a form beats a click. And a reply beats a form, while another click never moves them.

Your sequences list shows what starts each one: the action, and the campaign it's on.

Only someone the campaign was sent to can start it. Each person goes through a sequence once, ever. Adding someone by hand, from the inbox, follows the same rules. And if one campaign suddenly starts far more people than one at a time explains, new starts pause, and the sequence tells you why.

That's what starts a sequence: one person's own action, on one campaign. Next up: see how your website is built, from a brief to live pages. Don't freeze up!
